Timothy John Payne

All Whites · Midfielder · #6

Timothy John Payne (Auckland, 10 January 1994) is a New Zealand professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Wellington Phoenix F.C. in the A-League and is a full international with the New Zealand national team, the All Whites.

He began his career at Auckland City in 2009, moved to Waitakere United, and then crossed to England to join Blackburn Rovers reserves in 2012 — though he never broke into the first team. After being released in 2014, he returned to Auckland City before heading to the United States with Portland Timbers 2. He returned to New Zealand in 2016 with Eastern Suburbs before signing for Wellington Phoenix in July 2019.

Payne made his international debut on 26 May 2012 and has since accumulated 50 caps and 3 goals for the All Whites, including a memorable brace against Solomon Islands in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. On 14 May 2026, he was officially named in New Zealand's squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The Viral Moment

On 28 May 2026, Argentine influencer Valen Scarsini («Scarso») urged his followers to follow Tim Payne — the "least known" player at the World Cup. The result was extraordinary: Payne's Instagram went from under 5,000 to 550,000+ followers in less than a day, reaching 1.5 million in three days and surpassing 4 million followers shortly after — making his account the most-followed football-related page in New Zealand history.
